Why is high blood pressure becoming more common?
Lifestyle changes worldwide are contributing to an increase in high blood pressure, or hypertension, even in developing countries. The increased availability of convenience foods has led to a decline in the consumption of fresh vegetables and whole grains, and an increased intake of salt, fats and sugars, and calories in general. Reduced levels of physical activity, along with the gradual shifts in diet, have resulted in an increasingly overweight and diabetes-prone population. Increased alcohol intake and cigarette smoking also contribute to high blood pressure. These changes are causing more cases of high blood pressure.
